WORLDS FIRST ZERO CARBON SOLAR COOLED ICE-SKATING RINK
5 X 5m PROOF OF CONCEPT RINK SINGAPORE
THE ISSUES
Global energy crisis causing rinks around the world to close
- In the UK, electricity cost doubled between 2019 to 2023 and now costs between £ 520 to £ 1.8k in energy alone to run a rink every 24 hours
- High maintenance and replacement costs due to equipment being on 24×7 hours, 365 days a year
THE SOLUTION
- Solar energy from panels on the roof of a rink powers a standard water chiller which freezes PCM in thermal units ® below the ice slab.
- The continuous freezing and melting causes heat transfer which cools the slab and environment to a consistent temperature of -18°C
- The high efficiency of technology means that 3 hours of sunlight can cool the rink for 2 days without any additional external source of energy
THE TECHNOLOGY
- 2 layers of refrigerant pipes (water/ethylene glycol) are used to freeze PCM and control temperature
- Thermal power is stored in the PCM floor units during the day at – 18C and utilized to cool down the environment 24/7
- A four-inch-thick layer of PCM can keep a rink ice floor cool for 2-3 days with insufficient sun.
BENEFITS
- Cost savings – Through energy efficiency, saving 70% on cooling OPEX alone
- Reduced maintenance costs – reduced overheating of equipment. Water chillers are run 1/3 of the time increasing their lifespan by 20 – 30 years
- Provides a consistent temperature below freezing point
- Additional revenue sources – net positive energy outcome means excess energy can be stored in batteries to run lights or sold back to the grid
